Annual Cliff Walk
ABOUT OUR ANNUAL CLIFF WALK
For those we love, for those we lost, we walk
The A.L.S. Family Charitable Foundation's 21st Annual "Cliff Walk" for A.L.S Fundraiser, Sponsored by Superior Rail & Iron Works, will be held on:
Cape Cod Canal
Sunday, September 10, 2017
This annual event is held every September in loving memory of Cliff Jordan, Jr., Edward J. Sciaba, Sr. and Janice Ferrara.
WE HAVE A BIG ANNOUNCEMENT TO MAKE
Due to construction at Buzzards Bay Park, this year’s Cliff Walk will be held in a beautiful spot on the opposite end of the Cape Cod Canal at the DCR Scusset Beach Reservation!
Same event. Same great.cause. New location.
Supporters are invited to spend the day on the beautiful Cape Cod Canal for a full day of fun and fundraising, featuring activities for the whole family, including raffles, prizes, BBQ, games, a balloon man, face painting, tug of war, bean bag toss, a playground for kids, live musical entertainment by the "Real Deal" and a scenic 7-mile walk along the Canal!
The A.L.S. Family Tree and Brick Walkway remain in the Buzzards Bay Park, and we will be holding the traditional brick placing ceremony at 9:30AM (Main Street, Buzzards Bay)
We are excited to take on this adventure with you at this great new location! Bring your walking shoes, an appetite and prepare for a great time!
Proceeds benefit the many in-house patient programs of the A.L.S. Family Charitable Foundation as well as research efforts.
Each September, our signature event – The “Cliff Walk” for A.L.S., takes place along the Cape Cod Canal. This tradition began in 1997 when 35 year-old Cliff Jordan had been living with Lou Gehrig’s Disease for two years; his ability to speak or swallow had been taken by this incapacitating disease.
Cliff decided to hold a fundraising walk along the Cape Cod Canal accompanied by friends and family with proceeds going to Dr. Robert Brown, a leader in A.L.S. research. With only three week’s notice, the first walk drew sixty people and raised $6,000. While Cliff rode his bike seven miles closer to a cure, he was also marking the start of an amazing tradition.
In January of 1998, Edward J. Sciaba lost his battle with A.L.S. That Spring, the disease stole the life of Cliff Jordan, and in 2000, Janice Ferrara also lost her life to ALS.
Grief stricken but resolute that they would not give up until a cure is found, their family members Donna Jordan, Mary Ann (Sciaba) Singersen, Lenny and Tony Ferrara vowed to help others going through the same ordeal.
Brought together by tragic circumstances, the Jordan, Sciaba and Ferrara families joined forces to continue the "Cliff Walk" for A.L.S. in memory of their loved ones and to honor and help all of the individuals and families touched by this disease.
The walk continues to grow each year and has raised over two million dollars since its inception.
