On September 9, 2007, we held the 11th Annual “Cliff Walk®” for A.L.S. Fundraiser sponsored by Superior Rail & Iron Works, Inc., WQRC, Capecod.com, and the Outback Steakhouse. Thanks to over one thousand family members and friends who gathered pledges, we raised over $152,000!!!
A very special thank you to all event-goers who brought lottery scratch tickets helping us to raise an additional … $720!! Many people joined in the fun and excitement by bringing the tickets, so we’re going to try it again next year. Keep your fingers crossed...
ALSFCF’s Board Member David Phillips served as Emcee for the entire event. He opened the ceremony, introduced guest speakers, and kept the crowd up-to-date on our fundraising progress and activities throughout the day.
Highlights
- Special thanks to the The Old Colony Young Marines for their ”Presentation of the Colors”. The Young Marines were led by 14 year-old Dylan DeSilva, founder of the non-profit organization, Cape Cod Cares for the Troops. The presentation was immediately followed by Hillary Zaniboni’s lovely rendition of the National Anthem and a moment of silence.
- A very special acknowledgement went out to our Event Sponsor Lenny Ferrara. His company, Superior Rail and Iron Works, Inc., has generously sponsored the “Cliff Walk®” every year.
- A round of applause also went out to our Media Sponsors WQRC and Capecod.com for donating over $5,700 in advertising. They also provided goodie bags and raffle items and introduced us to the good folks at The Outback Steakhouse. The restaurant was also recognized for their generous donation of “aussietizers” in the form of Chicken, Steak, Salad and Rolls.
- Among those thanked were our many loyal volunteers, including, for the first time, a group of 10 Best Buy employees. They began before 7:00am and were done with their duties and off to another event by 11:00am. Kudos to Rene McWilliams, General Manager of Best Buy in Hyannis for volunteering her crew and securing donations from Best Buy.
- This year we were pleased to welcome two very special guest speakers. Old friend but first time attendee, Terry Frank, Co-Founder of the ALS March of Faces spoke eloquently about the emotion behind the pictures on the March of Faces Banner and Jamie Heywood, founder of ALS Therapy Development Institute spoke about his valiant efforts to save the life of his brother Stephen (who passed away earlier this year) and the lives of all our loved ones fighting this disease.
- Jean Jordan also spoke, as she does every year, about two men in whose memory the walk is held; her husband, Cliff Jordan, Jr., brother to Donna Jordan, Co-Founder of our organization and Edward J. Sciaba, Sr., father of Mary Ann (Sciaba) Singersen, also a Co-Founder.
- Every year we read a list of names of our loved ones who’ve battled or are battling A.L.S. As the names are read, engraved bricks (inscribed with the names of our loved ones) are placed around our A.L.S. Family Tree.
*In 1999, the A.L.S. Family Charitable Foundation planted the A.L.S. Family tree as a symbol of hope for the families and patients affected by A.L.S. Bricks etched with the names of A.L.S. patients make a circular walkway around the tree.
A brick in honor of your loved one who is battling or has battled A.L.S. can be purchased by contacting the A.L.S. Family Charitable Foundation at (508) 759-9696 or by downloading the brick order.
- Event goers enjoyed a cookout, Outback “Aussietizers”, raffles, the musical talents of “Geno-Singing the Sounds of Sinatra & More” and “The Moonlighter’s”, and an appearance by the Cape Cod Corvette Club (many of CCCC members also made up our “core” volunteer base).
- After the walk, the kids entertainment included face painting, moonwalk, dunk tank, coloring contest, balloon man and a hoopman.
